Beach VB Splits Final Day of HBU Invite

HOUSTON – The University of New Orleans (10-5) rallied back to defeat host Houston Baptist University 3-2 before falling to Texas A&M University-Kingsville 3-2 in a close match that went down to the wire Saturday at Third Coast. The Privateers went 4-1 at the HBU Invitational.
 
NEW ORLEANS DEFEATS HBU 3-2
The Privateers trailed 2-0 after the Huskies took No. 4 and No. 5 in straight sets. Blessing Dunn and Brianna Vega won in straight sets over Bailey Banks and Kylie Bryan by a total of four points 21-19, 25-23 and Victoria Corcoran and Ally Carr erased a first set loss at No. 3 to take the match 12-21, 21-17, 15-7 to tie the match at 2-2.
 
Veronica Corcoran and Rachel Kuhn clinched the win by doing the same, turning away a 21-16 loss in the opening set at No. 1 to take the top flight 21-13, 20-18, and down HBU 3-2. It was UNO's second win over HBU in 10 matches.
 
TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE DEFEATS NEW ORLEANS 3-2
Heading into 1-2-3, UNO and TAMUK were tied following Rhyan Rand and Madison Miller's 21-18, 20-22, 15-7 win at No. 4.
 
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn tied the match at 2-2 with a 21-17, 16-21, 15-8 win at No. 1 after Dunn and Vega gave Madison Brabham and Kylexus Block a tough go at No. 2 (21-16, 19-21, 15-12). Victoria Corcoran and Carr tied No. 3 at 1-1 by flipping the opening set score on Haley Hutchinson and Macy Berg 21-18, 18-21. However, Hutchinson and Berg were able to secure the win for the Javelinas with a 15-12 third set win for the flight and match.
 
INSIDE THE TOURNAMENT
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn are 12-3 at No. 1 this season and Dunn and Vega are 7-4 since being paired with one another at No. 2. Miller and Rand have nine wins at No. 4 and Maxine Walsh and Alexa Spartz are 8-5 at No. 5.
 
NEXT UP
New Orleans head to the ULM Warhawk Challenge next weekend for rematches against HBU and ULM, the first of two scheduled meeting versus Central Arkansas and its lone meeting vs. Missouri State.
