NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (11-9, 4-5) will look to cap a 3-0 week on Sunday when they face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
Both women's tennis seniors,
Trang Dao and
Brittany Johnson will be honored before the match.
"I think those two seniors have contributed so much," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "Brittany improved so much over the years and she's matured into a better doubles player. She has stepped up to the plate and has served us really well so I'm proud of her. She's also been a good ambassador to the university.
"T.K. is one of the most talented players I've coached. She has fought her way through some challenges and has prevailed. She has had some big wins over her career and I couldn't be more proud of her as well. She has represented Vietnam and UNO in a very positive way."
Dao could secure her 50
th win on Senior Day, which would tie her for the third most singles wins in a career since 2000. She picked up her 49
th win on Friday during the Privateers' 4-3 victory over Lamar.
Johnson has been with the Privateers for four years as well. This year, she's teamed up with
Salma Abdelrahim for eight doubles victories. As a team, New Orleans is 34-19 in doubles matches this season.
The win on Friday put the Privateers back in the top eight. With two conference matches remaining for the Privateers, they sit in seventh place. New Orleans also has a match to make up next Tuesday against Southeastern.
The Islanders (13-5, 6-3) are in fifth place in the standings also with two matches left. They will close the regular season at home against Central Arkansas on Friday, Apr. 19. The Islanders' most recent match was a 4-3 win over Nicholls.
Mariya Shumeika leads a host of Islanders with more than 10 wins this spring. Shumeika is 14-4 overall (7-2 in conference play). Camille Townsend also has a 7-2 record against Southland opponents.
