Women's Tennis Looks to Improve Seeding, Travels to Southeastern

NEW ORLEANS – Coming off a 3-0 week, the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (12-9, 5-5) will make the trip to Hammond to face the Southeastern Lady Lions on Tuesday. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

The Privateers earned wins over Nicholls, Lamar, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The last win of the week against the Islanders was the first for New Orleans in eight meetings. With the win splurge, New Orleans has officially qualified for the Southland tournament and is now fighting for a higher seed.

New Orleans is currently in seventh but can move their way up to sixth with a win and a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi loss. If a three-way tie should occur between those two schools and McNeese, the Privateers would be seeded seventh.

Trang Dao reached a milestone on Sunday with her singles victory. She became the fourth Privateer since 2000 to record 50 career wins and tied Soledad Calderon for third on the wins list.

Ank Vullings also had a flawless week. She paired up with Dao for three more doubles victories at flight one as the duo moved to 13-4 overall and 7-3 in conference. Vullings also won all three of her singles matches to run her overall record to 11-9.

Lea Alguacil also had a big week, contributing four wins between doubles and singles. She teamed up with Claudette Gilhespie for a doubles victory at flight two against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Alguacil also won all three of her matches including the match clincher against Lamar.

New Orleans has won 16 of the last 18 meetings against Southeastern. The last three contests have gone down to the wire with the Privateers winning all of them by a 4-3 score. The Lady Lions defeated New Orleans in the fall at the George E. Fourmaux Invitational.

Southeastern (7-11, 4-6) pulled off a 4-3 win over Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. Katya Cornejo came back from down a set to win at flight six singles which gave Southeastern the victory. Putri Insani leads Southeastern in singles wins this year with 10.
