NEW ORLEANS – Wednesday continues a week full of matchups between New Orleans and Tulane. The Privateers women's tennis team (9-7) will also face in-state foe Tulane this week on Wednesday at City Park. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
The Privateers are coming off a 5-2 loss in their last outing at Abilene Christian. Heading into this week with a pair of conference road matches on the horizon in the weekend, New Orleans sits in a tie for seventh place in the Southland Conference standings. New Orleans will travel to Southeastern on Friday and McNeese on Sunday.
Salma Abdelrahim leads the team in conference singles wins (four) and is tied for the overall team lead with eight. Abdelrahim has played across four different flights in her first collegiate season on the Lakefront.
Trang Dao and
Ank Vullings are 4-2 against conference only competition in doubles and 9-3 overall as a unit at flight one this season. Dao has 46 career singles victories, the fourth most since 2000.
New Orleans is searching for their first win over Tulane since 2002. The Green Wave have won 13 of 14 meetings since 1996.
Tulane (7-12) has not won a conference match in five tries. Their last bout against an AAC opponent was a 4-1 loss to then 27
th ranked UCF. Since then, the Green Wave have gone 2-2 in four non-conference matches. They lost to Harvard and Middle Tennessee and defeated Marshall and Southern Miss.
Maria Brito is in her second year as head coach at Tulane. Brito played at Clemson where she helped the Tigers to a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Championships in 2005. Brito was an assistant coach at Clemson from 2013-17 before coming to Tulane.
Daniela La Fuente leads the team in singles wins this spring with eight. Ivone Alvaro follows closely behind with seven. In doubles, Alvaro and Elena Mueller have put forth an astounding 15-1 record all at flight one. They are the 33
rd ranked doubles tandem in the nation according to the ITA.
