Women's Tennis Starts Three-Match Week Against Nicholls

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team will look to get back on track at home when they take on the Nicholls Colonels. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Wednesday at the University Tennis Center.

As the season winds down, the competition for the final spots in the Southland tournament is heating up. With the loss on Sunday at McNeese, the Privateers drifted to half a game behind Southeastern for the final spot in the tournament. New Orleans still has a match with Southeastern to make up on top of their three scheduled matches for the remainder of the week.

Trang Dao picked up her 10th win of the spring, beating Charoline Erlandsson of McNeese. The victory put Dao's career total at 48 singles victories heading into the week. She is two wins away from tying Soledad Calderon for third on the career wins list since 2000. Dao had a 3-1 week against McNeese and Tulane.

While Dao leads the team in total singles wins, Salma Abdelrahim has secured the most conference victories with four. Abdelrahim has a total record of 8-8 in her freshman season. Ank Vullings and Mar Gendra also have eight wins each this spring.

Heading into Wednesday, the Privateers have won three straight matches against Nicholls. Last year, the Privateers defeated the Thibodaux based school 5-2.

Nicholls (3-13, 1-7) has lost three straight heading into Wednesday. Their last victory was their lone conference win against UIW on Mar. 31. The Colonels will have a match against Loyola on Tuesday before facing off against the Privateers.

Stephanie Barnett and Antonia Roessli each have eight wins this spring. Barnett was a former LSWA Women's Tennis Player of the Year (2015). She sat out most of 2016 and all of 2017 due to an injury.
