Ehize Omoghibo made a big impact in her debut season on the Lakefront: so much so that she won Southland Newcomer of the Year honors in 2018. This year she will be joined on the right side by a freshman who comes from just 20 miles outside of the New Orleans campus in
Valerie Vujnovich.
Â
Omoghibo became the first in program history to win conference Newcomer of the Year honors. The now senior transferred to the Privateers from Coastal Georgia where she was top three on the team in kills and blocks. In her first season with New Orleans, Ehize racked up 179 kills. She is also the leading returner in blocks (82 last year).
Â
The Evanston, Ill. native had four matches of double digit kills with a season-best 12 coming at McNeese. Her highest single match total in blocks was eight, which she achieved in the opening weekend of the '18 season against Houston.
Â
Vujnovich is part of a large newcomer contingent (nine total). The freshman is joined by a fellow high school teammate in
Nia St. Cyr.
Â
Val played three sports in high school (volleyball, soccer, track and field). While with the Cardinals, she was an all-district selection three times. She also helped Belle Chasse to a quarterfinal run as a senior and was part of a semifinal run as a freshman. During her time at Belle Chasse, Vujnovich was also named her district's Offensive Most Valuable Player.
