Track & Field Adds Transfer Thrower Daija Young

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans track & field program added a key transfer to the mix as the Privateers signed thrower Daija Young from Bowling Green University, made official by throwing coach Jermisha Frazier on Thursday.

"I'm very excited for the contributions our new signees are bringing to the Threauxs squad," Frazier said. "Daija is coming in as a strong athlete and will add depth to our developing program. She will make extraordinary training partners for our current team members and will help us come championship season. I'm really looking forward to this upcoming fall!"

The Cleveland, Ohio native is coming to New Orleans after spending the past three years with the Bowling Green program. Young is championship battled-tested as she has competed in four Mid-American Championship meets between indoor and outdoor. She has taken to the field for five events in total during the championship season and has finished in the top-18 in all five of them. Young's best finish was an 11th-place showing in the shot put at the 2019 MAC Indoor Championships.

Young enters with collegiate bests of 13.45m (44-1.5) in the shot, 49.26m (161-7) in the hammer, 47.97m (157-4) in the discus and 17.46m (57-3.5) in the weight throw.

Before college, Young was a standout athlete at Trinity High School just outside of Cleveland. She was a state shot put champion and the state runner-up in the discus at the 2016 championships during her senior campaign. She is the school recorder holder in the discus at the program and served as a two-year team captain. Young also played basketball for the school.

She will be joining a throwing program that scored 12 points across both the men's and women's units at the 2020 Southland Indoor Championships.
