NEW ORLEANS – All-Louisiana first-teamer
Grayson Gilbert fell just short of becoming the first Privateer in a decade to be crowned the Louisiana Amateur Champion on Sunday afternoon at Bayou Oaks at City Park.
Entering the final round on the South Course trailing co-leaders Derek Busby of Ruston and Greg Berthelot of Baton Rouge by three strokes the sophomore struck for par on hole one before an incredible 30-yard chip in for birdie on hole two gave the Monroe native early momentum. Another birdie following a short putt on hole five tied Grayson for first-place entering the back nine.
A birdie on 11 kept pace with leaders, but strong rounds of 68 by Eli Oretgo from Broussard and 67 by John Holmes out of Woodworth were too much to overcome. Gilbert finished tied for third with Busby at 281 – seven under par after rounds of 73, 67, 71 and 70. Grayson's second-round score matched Humphries' score from today for the low round among the entire field, as well as a course record.
Earlier in the day fellow Privateer
Brady Bennett carded a 72 to finish his tournament at 300 strokes – tied for 46
th place. The junior out of Zachary had his best score in four attempts at the Louisiana Amateur Championship and tied for his best finish as well.
Head Coach
Jeff Lorio, a member of the LGA Board of Directors, missed the cut on Friday following rounds of 80 and 77.
Humphries was crowned the champion for the second straight year, and became the first person to win the event three times in his career after finishing with a final score of 279 – nine under par.
