2021 Season Begins with Green Wave Invitational

SCHEDULE | ROSTER | STATISTICS

ELMWOOD, La. –
New Orleans beach volleyball begins season No. 7 tomorrow at the Green Wave Invitational. The Privateers are scheduled to take on host #RV Tulane at 8:30 a.m. and Southeastern Louisiana at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, and UAB at 8:30 a.m. and Utah at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

All four matches will take place at White Sands. Tulane will be streaming matches on its YouTube channel. The links are on UNOPrivateers.com.

The Privateers return a veteran squad, spearheaded by Veronica Corcoran, who is the program's all-time leader in wins (69) and will compete at No. 1 for the third consecutive season. Victoria Corcoran and Brianna Vega are in their fifth season representing the Privateers, and Ally Carr and Maxine Walsh are in year No. 4 on the Lakefront. Alexa Spartz enters her third season and graduate transfer Madeline Drake is poised to make her Privateer debut, along with second-year freshmen Liz Gialanella and Hailey Melerine.

Millicent Van Norden mentioned the experience returning to the sand, and it shows as three seniors returned following a COVID-19 shortened season. All student-athletes retained last season's athletic eligibility.

Veronica Corcoran went 8-2 at No. 1 with Lucie Pokorna, who is in the midst of the indoor season. She graduated with a degree in marketing and returns as a fifth year. All-time, her 46 wins are tied with Rachel Kuhn for the most in program history. Her 28 wins at No. 1 are tops for UNO.

Victoria Corcoran went 7-3 at No. 2 with Carr and has 37 career victories. She too graduated with honors and is returning as a fifth year. She enters with 13 career wins at No. 2.

Carr is a junior athletically but will graduate this spring. The Canadian has 32 career wins after picking up seven with Victoria Corcoran last season.

Vega is also a fifth year and has matched her sensational indoor career with one on the sand. She has 34 career wins and went 7-2 last season, going 5-1 at No. 3 with Kuhn and 2-1 at No. 4 with Spartz. She graduated in the spring of 2020.

Drake was unable to compete last season after joining the Privateers as a graduate student from Northwestern State.

Walsh is a junior on the sand and went 5-5 last year with three wins coming at No. 5. Walsh has 17 career wins.

Spartz will be a sophomore on the beach courts and has 16 wins through two seasons. The Arizona native won 11 matches as a true freshman in 2019 and picked up five victories last season, four at No. 4.

Gialanella officially competed in one match (exhibition) last year and Melerine went 1-3 (including exhibitions) with a win over Nicholls.

The indoor student-athletes will shift to the sand following the completion of the indoor volleyball season. Expected to join are Trinity Jackson (5-4 in 2020), Chloe Hampton (3-6), Pokorna (8-2 at No. 1), and Hannah Volpi.

The season begins with the Tulane Green Wave Invitational February 26-27 at White Sands. The record book can be found HERE.
