CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – New Orleans (7-14) will enter the inaugural Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Championship as the No. 5 seed. The Privateers take on No. 4 Central Arkansas (17-14) to begin the tournament Friday at 11 a.m. at Islander Courts at the Water's Edge in Corpus Christi.
The winner takes on top seed and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-11). The league championship is double elimination until the championship game, scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
UNO went 5-1 against Southland opponents in the regular season, defeating opening-round foe UCA 3-2 on April 10.
New Orleans is ranked No. 47 in the Pablo Beach Rankings, the rankings system used for seeding at the tournament.
Veronica Corcoran and
Victoria Corcoran are 12-9 at the top flight. The twins are No. 1 and No. 2 in career wins with 58 (Veronica) and 49 (Victoria), with Veronica posting a 40-24 all-time record at No. 1. The Corcoran twins rank No. 92 in the MoVR Rankings.
Maxine Walsh and
Ally Carr have competed at No. 2 the entire season, posting seven victories. Both are in their fourth season as Privateers. Carr ranks fourth in program history with 39 wins, with Walsh sitting in a three-way tie for sixth.
Brianna Vega and
Liz Gialanella are at No. 3 and have a victory as a dual, with Vega tallying 38 career wins.
Madeline Drake (eight total wins) and
Alexa Spartz (eight victories) are a pair at No. 4 and have five wins as a pair, entering the tournament on a three-match win streak.
Trinity Jackson and
Hannah Volpi joined the team midseason following the completion of the indoor campaign. The freshmen are 6-3 at No. 5 and are winners of their last two.
Hailey Melerine has competed with
Chloe Hampton and
Sh'Diamond Holly in the exhibition.
