- New Orleans showed out in the 4x100 against some of the best teams in the SEC as the team of
Kemar Cumberbatch,
Ismael Kone,
James Grant and
Elliott Cummings ran to a third-place finish at 40.29. The performance was a new school record and ranks seventh in the Southland Conference. It also slots in at 29th in the East Region. "I was happy that we got our men's 4x100 squad around the track for the first time this outdoor season," director of track & field
Brian Johnson said. "The time could have been a little bit better, but it gives us something to get better at and work towards as we near the championships. It is a mark that could get us an east preliminary qualifying time. It really gives us a time to shoot to beat at conference and give us a chance to get this great group to regionals."
-
Elliott Cummings continues to get stronger and stronger as the Privateers near the championship season as he took second overall (and was the top collegiate athlete) in the men's 100-meter dash with a new personal best of 10.26. The mark sits fourth overall in the Southland, 14th in the East and 22nd in all of NCAA DI track & field. The performance was also the second-best time recorded in the event in school history. "Elliott did his thing today and ran a 10.26," Johnson said. "I am really proud of him. He has come a long way and there is still so much more to come with him. Really excited to see him at the championships."
-
Anna Martin and
Amelia Bretz both set new personal records at 4:49.84 and 4:58.77 as they claimed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the women's 1500-meter. It was the first time both student-athletes went under five minutes in their young UNO careers. "Anna did well today," Johnson said. "Going into today she needed a big time and that's a huge PR for her to be under five. I thought she battled today and did her thing. It was big for Amelia to clock under five as well."
-
Gerald Coleman set a new personal best by almost two seconds as he posted a 53.26 to take sixth overall in the men's 400-meter hurdles. "Gerald is back on track," Johnson said. "He had a tough indoor season but has bounced back with a big outdoor campaign. He is another student-athlete who is hitting their stride at the right time."
- The Privateers went a perfect 2-for-2 in setting personal bests in the women's 800-meter as
Allie Louis took 15th at 2:15.83 and
Jantrell Drakes finished right behind in 17th with a time of 2:19.33. Louis is now ranked eighth in the Southland while Drakes improved to 17th overall. "Jantrell did very good today and ran a great race," Johnson said. "Allie has really seemed to find her stride as we head towards the championships."
- In total, New Orleans set one school record and seven personal bests to close out the regular season.
- "Overall, I was really happy with the performance today," Johnson said. "We are slowly building this program into one with championship aspirations. Our student-athletes are putting up great performances, and it isn't just in a couple events, we are doing it across the board. If we keep moving in this right direction, the best is yet to come."
- "It's looking good for us," Johnson concluded. When I first got here, we didn't have anyone make it to regionals and this year we have eight student-athletes in the mix in just our third year with the program. We are building towards that championship squad that I like through the hard work of our student-athletes and my coaching staff of
Brock Moreaux and
Jermisha Frazier. We just have to stay healthy for these next two weeks. I am really excited to see where we are when it comes to championship time."
