EUGENE, Ore. – The University of New Orleans will take to the national stage as standout sprinter
Ismael Kone will represent the Privateer program in the 100-meter semifinals at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at historic Hayward Field on Wednesday evening.
Kone will take to the track at 8:16 PM CT (6:16 PM PT) in lane two of the third heat of the semis. His race will be featured on the national broadcast of ESPN2, which will begin its live coverage at 8 PM CT. To go with the broadcast on cable, the meet is also available to be
streamed on ESPN.com/Watch with the following link.
Kone is the first UNO student-athlete to advance to the national championships since 2017 and will look to become the first to score at a national championship meet in school history. He can advance to Friday's 100-meter finals if he finishes in the top-two of his heat or posts one of the three best times after the six automatic qualifiers.
The freshman put himself in national contention after he ran a 10.09 at the NCAA East Preliminary Round to qualify for nationals. The time was a new school record and personal best and ranked Kone 14th in the nation coming into Wednesday's semifinal.
Kone will toe the line in lane two of heat three against Arian Smith (Georgia – 10.10), Kasaun James (Florida State – 10.04), Shaun Maswanganyi (Houston – 9.87), Terrance Laird (LSU – 9.80), Bryan Henderson (Sam Houston State – 10.11), Kamden Jackson (Baylor – 10.25) and Lawrence Johnson (Wisconsin – 10.22).
Kone's heat features five underclassmen in total (four freshmen and one sophomore) and five student-athletes from power-five programs (not including Houston's student-athletes) to go with another Southland competitor.
