NEW ORLEANS – With the men's talented roster mostly filled out, the New Orleans track & field team has started to attack its women's squad and did so in a big way with the addition of standout thrower Samantha Dyson by way of Youngstown State. The signing was made official by director of track & field
Brian Johnson on Saturday.
"I am super excited to have Samantha on our women's squad", Johnson said. "She can do multiple events and that is a big plus for us as we chase that Southland championship trophy. I have no doubt that she will come in and score a ton of points for our team. She is going to be a difference-maker for our program."
Dyson just wrapped up her junior season with Youngstown State where she won the individual title in the shot, placed second in the hammer and claimed third in the discus at the 2021 Horizon League Outdoor Championships. This came after a third-place performance in both the shot and weight throw at the indoor championship meet.
She was named the Women's Championships Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor championship meets as she helped Youngstown State to a clean sweep of the 2021 track & field titles.
For her career, the Punxsutawney, Pa. native podiumed six times between the Horizon League indoor and outdoor championships. Dyson also won three outdoor team titles and three indoor championships with the Penguins program.
Dyson will enter New Orleans with collegiate personal bests of 14.84m (48-8.25) in the shot, 46.72m (153-3) in the discus, 56.53m (185-5) in the hammer and 17.79m (58-4.5) in the weight throw. She will have two years of competition remaining with the Privateers.
