Women's Tennis Opens Spring Campaign at South Alabama

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team begins their 2022 spring with a short trip down the gulf coast to face the South Alabama Jaguars. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday in Mobile.

The Privateers are fresh off their best season in the Southland in which they won a share of the conference regular season championship. New Orleans returns almost everybody from that squad including all-conference selections, Lina Hohnhold, Ank Vullings, Salma Abdelrahim and Lea Alguacil.

Burzis Kanga also won conference Coach of the Year honors for a Privateer squad that went 12-3 overall, 10-1 in conference and 7-0 at home.

New Orleans had a limited fall schedule due to Hurricane Ida but the Privateers did play twice in Pensacola. The Privateers ended the fall on a strong note by sweeping the board in singles and doubles flights at the UWF Fall Fling.

Hohnhold and Alguacil combined to win the doubles bracket. Alguacil won a third set tiebreak to take the second flight of singles while Hohnhold prevailed in the top flight over the tournament.

The outset of the schedule includes a road heavy start with four of the first five matches of the season taking place away from the University Tennis Center.
