COLLEGE STATION – The University of New Orleans Cross Country teams continued to excel with the women finishing ninth and the men finishing 13th at a highly competitive Arturo Barrios Invitational on Saturday morning.
Ariana Jimenez and
Alexandra Weir led the way for the Privateer women finishing in 28
th and 29
th place with times of 21:19.3, and 21:23.6. The two times rank 7
th and 8
th in school history among women's 6K times. The women, ranked No. 11 in the latest USTFCCCA South Central Regional poll, finished ahead of No. 4 LSU, No. 8 Tulane, No. 12 Arkansas State and No. 14 Rice. They were also the best finishers among Louisiana and Southland schools. The women's average time was one minute and 15 seconds faster than that of Lamar – the next best Southland school in the race.
Four Privateer women set personal bests in College Station.
Tshwanelo Maruping knocked an incredible four minutes off her previous best - 25:53.6 set during the MSC Cross Country Series last season – with a time of 21:54.6.
Michelle Folk's time of 22:49.1 was over two minutes faster than her previous personal best time of 24:56.0 set during the 2019 Southland Championships.
Anna Martin's time of 22:28.5 was an almost 30 second improvement on her time at last season's Southland Championships, and
Rebecca DeKay improved on her time at last season's South Central Regionals with a time of 21.54.4.
Kolyn Saltzman led the way for the Privateer men with a 29
th place finish and a time of 24:25.9. The UNO men, ranked No. 10 in the latest USTFCCA South Central Regional poll, finished second among Southland schools ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Lamar, Texas A&M-Commerce, and Nicholls as well Louisiana schools LSU, Louisiana, and ULM.
Three Privateer men also set personal bests.
Mason Appleton's time of 25:58.1 was 50 seconds faster than his effort at last month's North Alabama Showcase. Alex Soil knocked almost 27 seconds off his previous best 8K time after finishing in 25:56.7 this morning.
Gary Sandrock finished with a time of 25:34.9, a 13-second improvement from his time at the North Alabama Showcase.
The hosting Texas A&M Aggies won the men's team title with a point total of 71, and Bradley Makuvire of Tulane won the individual men's title with a time of 23:25.5. Ohio State won the women's team title with 38 points and Parker Valby of Florida won the individual title with a time of 18:58.2.
New Orleans returns to action in two weeks for the Southland Conference Championships at Nicholls Farm in Thibodaux on Friday Oct. 28.
