HOUSTON, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the HBU Tournament at Third Coast. The Privateers scored a 5-0 win against HBU and were defeated 3-2 by ULM.
PRIVATEERS SWEEP SOUTHLAND COMPETITOR, HBU
New Orleans got out to a strong start and served early notice as they avenged a loss against the team that knocked them out of the Southland Tournament last season.
The Privateers won three of the five matches in straight sets.
Maxine Walsh and
Hannah Volpi took a 2-0 victory while
Alexa Spartz and
Trinity Jackson also won in straight sets at flight three.
Liz Gialanella and
Taylore Louviere also scored a straight-set victory as they won at flight four. The bookend matches at flights one and five stretched to a third set but both Privateer pairs came out on the winning side.
Tara Goolsby and
Serena Baumgart won their debut paired up together at flight five while
Ania Esarte and
Lucie Pokorna also won in three sets at flight one.
DAY BEGINS WITH NARROW LOSS VS. ULM
Spartz and Jackson were 2-0 on the day along with Esarte and Pokorna who both won in straight sets against the Warhawks. However, ULM won a pair of three-set matches to defeat the Privateers earlier in the afternoon.
ULM scored victories at flight two, four and five. The matches at flight two and five both went to the max, finishing in three sets.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will close the tournament against Southeastern and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
