NEW ORLEANS – It's championship season once again for the New Orleans Privateers Track and Field team when they travel to the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama for the 2022 Southland Indoor Championships on Sunday and Monday.
Both the men's and women's squads are looking to build off their best-ever Southland Indoor Championships last season – the men finished in 8
th-place with a total of 40 points, while the women finished in 5
th-place with a total of 48 points.
Brian Johnson's 60M male sprints squad is currently ranked 18th by the USTFCCCA. The male runners have excelled so far this season.
Julian Forde has the best 60M time in the Southland this year, while
Ismael Kone (2
nd), and
Elliott Cummings (4
th) round out the top four.
In the 200M Kone and Cummings are 2
nd and 4
th in the league respectively. In the 800M
Parker McBride has won all three races he entered and holds the top time in the conference this season, while
Alec Snell (2
nd) and
Adrian Bichara (4
th) round out the top five.
Snell (3
rd),
Jaden Forester (5
th), and
Cade Litolff (7
th) also own three of the conference's top-10 times in the mile this year.
On the women's side
Vivette Green has the second best 60M and 200M time in the conference, while
Esther Nwanze has the 7
th best 400M time.
Alexandra Weir has the 2nd-best mile time in the conference. The women have shined the in the 3000M with Weir (2
nd),
Ariana Jimenez (3
rd), and
Arina Kleshchukova (5
th) having top-five times in the Southland this season.
New Orleans Track and Field squad has won 18 different individual events so far this season, and
Alvaro Canarte (Feb. 23), Kone (Feb. 9),
Christopher Murphy (Feb. 23), and Weir (Feb. 9) have all been named Southland Runner or Field Athlete of the week so far this season.
