NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers beach volleyball team split the first day of competition at the Tulane Classic. New Orleans won 4-1 against Nicholls and were handed a 4-1 defeat by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at White Sands on Friday.

The Privateers started the day with a dominant effort in defeating the Colonels in the first meeting this season between the two sides.
Hailey Melerine and
Valerie Vujnovich continued their winning streak in the opening match of the day with a 21-9, 21-10 victory, their fifth consecutive.
Alexa Spartz and
Trinity Jackson also scored a straight sets victory. After holding off Nicholls' duo in the first set, Spartz and Jackson took control of the second set in a 21-18, 21-13 win.
Hannah Volpi and
Maxine Walsh won 21-16, 21-10 and
Lucie Pokorna and
Ania Esarte scored a 21-10, 21-14 victory.

The Privateers took the first two flights to three sets but were ultimately defeated in both of those matches.
The Privateers got the lone point of the match when Spartz and Jackson won at flight three. The tandem won in extra rallies in the first set on their way to a 26-24, 21-19 decision.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi notched their second win over the Privateers this season when they took the third set at flight one 15-9 and the third set at flight two 15-11. The Islanders won the remaining two matches in straight sets.

The Privateers close the tournament with matches against Tulane and Southern Miss on Saturday.
