FRISCO, Texas – After a masterful performance on Sunday in the series finale,
Collin Horton was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week. The announcement came from the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Horton's gem spanned 8.2 innings and he held the Youngstown State Penguins without a hit until the ninth inning when Braeden O'Shaughnessy singled through the left side. Horton also racked up 16 strikeouts, which landed one shy of tying a program single-game record.
The Privateers were locked in a scoreless tie until
Anthony Herron Jr. walked it off with a home run in the ninth inning to give New Orleans a 1-0 victory.
On top of the Southland accolade, Horton's performance was noted by Collegiate Baseball as he was one of their National Players of the Week. D1Baseball also referenced Horton's stellar start in their stat round-up.
Horton was tantalizingly close to the Privateers' 10
th no-hitter in history. The last was achieved by Tom Lipari in 2001 against Southern Miss. Horton also tied for the third-most strikeouts in a game in program history.
Thomas Diamond (2004) and Terry Kieffer (1974) co-hold the single game strikeout record at 17.
After the weekend, Horton vaulted up to second in the Southland in strikeouts, only trailing Northwestern State's Cal Carver who has 31.
Horton becomes the second Privateer to win a weekly Southland award this season joining
Pearce Howard.
The Privateers have a four-game week ahead with a home contest against South Alabama scheduled for Tuesday and a weekend series at Oklahoma.
