Box Score NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team got out to a great start and battled throughout but were defeated 4-1 by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
The season ends for New Orleans with a record of 14-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers got out to a great start in doubles.
Lina Hohnhold and
Salma Abdelrahim won their match 6-2. The Islanders responded with a 6-2 win of their own at flight three which brought it down to flight two.
Ank Vullings and
Lea Alguacil were resilient, battling back at every turn and eventually securing a service break late on that secured a 6-4 win to get the first point of the day.
However, it was the Islanders who won several key tiebreakers on the way to advancing to the championship match. Camille Townsend secured key service breaks late in both sets to win 6-3, 6-4. Then Victoire Delattre won a crucial tiebreak in the first set at flight five on the way to taking the match 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The Islanders got their third point at flight three when Mariya Shumeika persevered in two tiebreaks, winning 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5).
Emma Aucagne closed the match when she secured a service break in a back-and-forth, three-set match. Aucagne, who was the Southland Player of the Year, won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to advance Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to the finals where they will face NJIT.
Mar Gendra was at a set apiece at flight four and Algaucil was leading early in the third set when the match was clinched.
