BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - University of New Orleans'
Ismael Kone is headed back to Eugene, Oregon for the 2022 DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This time, he will compete in the 100M and the 200M after his performances in the NCAA East Preliminaries on a wet Friday evening at Indiana University's Haugh Track & Field Complex.
The sophomore from Dallas, Texas and originally, Ivory Coast, began the evening by running the third leg for the 4x100m relay (39.68) with Forde,
Elliott Cummings, and
Mason Melancon. The squad narrowly missed their ticket to nationals by one spot and five one hundredths of a second placing thirteenth. Securing the final spot in the Regional Quarterfinal was Ohio State with a 39.63.
Shortly after the relay, Kone came back to win his 100M heat and mark the third fastest time going into nationals with a 10.11. To conclude the night, Kone earned the automatic qualifying spot for nationals in the 200M placing third in his heat with a 20.80.
Freshman
Julian Forde wrapped up an amazing season placing sixth in his heat of the quarterfinals and fourteenth overall. The newcomer was one of only three freshmen in the field of twenty-four men in the event.
UP NEXT
Kone is only one of two male Southland Conference student-athletes to advance to nationals from the East Preliminaries. The National Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11 at historic Hayward Field. The semifinals of the 100m dash are set for Wednesday, June 8 at 7:46 pm Central followed by the 200m dash at 8:44 pm Central.
