NATCHITOCHES, La. – Three Privateers made their debut as part of the Lady Demon Invitational over the weekend hosted by Northwestern State. Two Privateers won consolation finals in their brackets as part of the opening weekend.
Diane Bredberg Canizares had marathon matches in the opening weekend. After a three-set win against Renske Ubachs (Northwestern State), Canizares came up on the short end of a third set tiebreak against Hannah Chambers from Southern Miss.
On Saturday though, Canizares outlasted Jemma Cave of Stephen F. Austin in a third set 10-point tiebreak that went beyond. Canizares won the third set 15-13 to notch her second win of the weekend.
Four Privateers recovered from opening round losses to make the consolation final of their respective brackets. Two Privateers won their singles consolation bracket:
Ksenia Reznitskaya,
Anastassia Kouchnareva and
Laurie Barendse.
In the Grey Bracket, Reznitskaya was defeated by Maddison Ricardo of Southern Miss. The true freshman recovered with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory against Mackenzie King (ULM) to make the consolation final. Reznitskaya won her consolation final 6-1, 6-3.
Laurie Barendse bounced back from an opening round defeat at the hands of Momoko Yoshimura (UL). Barendse won 6-2, 6-2 against Shevita Aulana of Southern Miss in her first match of the consolation bracket. In the consolation final, Barendse won 6-3, 6-1 against Tamara Bachmann (ULM).
Tristanne Dechoux, playing for the first time since April 2021 was in a grueling match against Alyssa Richter of Southern Miss. Dechoux was defeated in two long sets 7-6(2), 7-5. Her first consolation bracket match was a 6-2, 6-2 win against Oleksandra Balaba of ULM.
Anastassia Kouchnareva lost a tough second set tiebreak in her opening round match against Suhana Das of Southern Miss. Then Kouchnareva rallied from down a set to beat Carla Urchoeguia of Louisiana 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. Kouchnareva coasted to a win on Saturday 6-0, 6-4 to win the consolation bracket.
In doubles, Kouchnareva and Barendse were paired together in the Purple Bracket as they played the consolation final. Dechoux and Reznitskaya were paired up in the Black Doubles Draw. Kouchnareva and Barendse won the consolation bracket by picking up a 6-2 victory against Stephen F. Austin.
