HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team had a solid debut against tough local competition at the Southern Miss Invitational over the weekend.
On Sunday, the men's team won five of seven singles matches against Southern Miss. They followed that performance up with three singles victories against Louisiana and a win from
Marcel Volz against Tulane.
RESULTS
Volz, the reigning Southland Player of the Year, was impressive in his win against Luka Petrovic of Tulane. Volz's win came against the sophomore Petrovic who had an impressive freshman debut that featured singles wins against five nationally ranked teams.
Volz also joined
Karim Al-Amin,
Matthew Armbruster,
Lilian Dubois and
Luke Joujan who all had singles victories against Southern Miss. All of those victories came in straight sets.
Dubois, Joujan and Lagarde all had wins against the Ragin' Cajuns who held a 17-6 record last spring.
Al-Amin and Armbruster also won on the first day of competition as they each produced singles wins against South Alabama. Al-Amin came back from losing a first set tiebreaker to beat Jack Clements.
Armbruster scored a decisive win by a 6-3, 6-1 score line against Maxime St-Hilaire who was a Second Team All-Sun Belt selection last year.
FROM COACH KANGA
"When you look at who we played I think it's fair to say several teams from this weekend can be in the top 50. We held our own overall and I was really pleased with the results today especially in our singles against Tulane and UL. They played tough matches in 90-plus degree heat and they persevered."
