NEW ORLEANS – Freshman
Mason Appleton and a senior
Elliott Cummings highlighted a solid opening day, and the University of New Orleans Track and Field student-athletes set five personal bests on Friday at the LSU Purple Tiger.
New Orleans saved its best result for their last event on Friday evening when Appleton's fantastic final push gave him the championship in the three-kilometer race on Friday evening. Mason managed to complete the final segment of his race in 28.296 after averaging 36.044 per 200 meters for the first 2800 meters of the race.
Cummings won his 60-meter preliminary heat before finishing third in the 60-meter finals with a time of 6.78 behind Da'Marcus Fleming (6.73) and Godson Oghenebrume (6.74) – both out of LSU. The result marked the eighth time in his short UNO career that Elliott has finished in the top three of a race.
Although they didn't qualify for the finals of their 60-meter races,
Ellis Cummings (6.95),
Christopher Murphy (6.97),
Mason Melancon (6.98), and
Aryn Pitre (7.90) all set personal bests during the preliminary heats. Murphy also placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.90 meters on his fifth attempt.

Anna Martin finished with a time of 5:20.39,
Michelle Folk finished with a time of 5:34.64 and
Holly Hedrick finished with a time of 5:42.18.

Briana Bell finishing in 11th place with a distance of 10.15 meters on her third toss in her throws debut.
Trinity Bracey made her Privateer debut with an 8.01 in the 60-meter, while her sister Sarinity began her UNO career with a 9.25 in the 60-meter hurdles. Freshman high jumper
Quinton Collins also jumped in his first event for the Privateers.
HEAD COACH BROCK MOREAUX
"I was really pleased with how the opening day went. We knew going in we had a few kinks to iron out and I thought our young men and women responded to that challenge extremely well. We got exactly what we needed out of today."
"I was especially excited to see how our team supported one another throughout the day. Everyone was engaged not only with their events, but the events of all their teammates. That will be big for us in building both a championship team and championship culture."
