Privateers Continue Early Season Home Stretch Against Southern

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team returns to the court on Tuesday when they face the Southern Jaguars at the Privateer Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
 
New Orleans (1-0) looked strong in their season opening sweep of North Alabama. The Privateers controlled matters throughout doubles and continued their momentum into singles play. Four Privateers went 2-0 on the day.
 
Raluca Puscas won her spring debut 6-0, 6-0 against Nicole Reilly of North Alabama. She became the first women's tennis player to win her debut without losing a game since 2016 when both Paula Garriga and
Brittany Johnson accomplished the feat.
 
Three other Privateers also won their season and Privateer debuts in straight sets. Didi Bredberg Canizares, Anastassia Kouchnareva and Kateryna Kalistratova all engineered straight set victories on Friday.
 
Canizares, Puscas, Tristanne Dechoux and Laurie Barendse all went 2-0 on the day.
 
The Privateers are in the midst of a stretch with six of their first seven matches of the season taking place at the Privateer Tennis Center where they have a mark of 29-11 since 2019.
 
New Orleans has played Southern in six of the last eight seasons. The Privateers have been victorious in all of those matches and have swept the Jaguars four times. The last meeting between the two sides was on Apr. 5, 2021. Dechoux played singles that day at flight two and won her match 6-2, 6-1.
 
Southern (0-1) lost their spring debut against Tulane on Saturday at City Park. The Jaguars were 2-13 overall last season and both of those wins came against SWAC opponents. Southern has four seniors on their roster.
