SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Emma Bourg and Junior Evan Pardo took home Freshman and Newcomer of the Year Honors on Friday afternoon at the Southland Conference Championships on Friday morning.
Freshmen sensation Emma Bourg took home the league's Freshman of the Year crown after finishing in 10th place with a time of 22:20.7. The Houma native is the first Cross Country Women's Freshman of the Year in school history in any conference. Her finish was also good enough to earn the final All-Southland second-team spot, and she is the first All-Conference selection as a freshman since Michaela Mannova was named All-Sun Belt following the 2000 season.
Bourg was joined as an All-Southland selection by Tshwanelo Maruping, and Alexandra Weir. Maruping – last season's Southland Newcomer of the Year – finished in fourth place with a team of 21:42.1 and earned First Team All-Southland status. Alexandra Weir finished in sixth place with a time of 29:51.1 – good for Second Team All-Southland. Both 'Nelo and Alex are now two-time All-Southland selections after earning the honor last year as well.
The Privateer women fell just short of becoming the first women's back-to-back conference champions in school history after finishing with 49 points in wet and muddy conditions at Windcrest Golf Course – four points behind the Lamar Cardinals. Sophia Wolf finished 14th with a time of 22:37.7 and Rebecca DeKay finished 15th with a time of 22:38.6 to round out the top five for the Privateers.
Pardo led the way for the Privateer men with a top-eight finish in his first attempt at the Southland Championships. Evan finished with a time of 25:18.6, good for second-team All-Southland honors and the best time by a Newcomer at this year's Championships. It is his first All-Southland selection, and he is the first Cross Country Male Newcomer of the Year in any conference for UNO.
Baptiste Depril-Dupre finished in 22nd with a time of 26:13.0, freshman Matthew Hansen finished in 25th with a time of 26:26.9 in his first Southland Championship, Kelvin Chiku finished right behind him in 26th with a time of 26:30.8, and Cade Litolff finished 28th with a time of 26:32.6 to round out the top five performers for the UNO men. The UNO men finished in fourth place with 106 – their fourth top four finish in the last four seasons.
