NEW ORLEANS – Freshman jumper
Alimot Alowonle took home the first Southland Championship medal of her career, and the Privateer Women took home third place in the Distance Medley Relay on the first day of the Southland Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Monday.
Alimot's winning jump was 5.94m, which was .12 meters ahead Lamar's Paarl Eelma. The mark was also just shy of the UNO record of 5.95m set by Melissa Evans in 1998. For her efforts, Alowonle earned 10 points towards the women's day one total of 30 points.
Earlier in the day the women's distance program dominated the 5K, collecting 14 points.
Ariana Jimenez led the way with a third place finish of 17:15.68, with
Rebecca DeKay finishing right behind her in fourth with a time of 17:18.96.
Mathilde Helms-Kjaer joined them in the top 10 with a sixth place finish in 17:32.23 – a twenty second improvement on her personal best.
Jimenez earned her second medal of the day when she finished in third place in the Women's Distance Medley alongside
Trinity Bracey,
Tshwanelo Maruping, and
Alexandra Weir in 11:53.26, about a second shy of last year's school record time.
The Privateer men dominated the mile with five out of six participants qualifying for tomorrow's finals.
Jaden Forester finished in first with a time of 4:18.29,
Cade Litolff finished fifth with a time of 4:20.68,
Javier Montero Castillejo finished seventh with a time of 4:21.31,
Mason Appleton finished eighth with a time of 4:21.57 and
Gary Sandrock finished 10
th with a personal best of 4:23.25.
In the men's 3000
Kolyn Saltzman finished in fourth place with a time of 14:25.51, earning five points for the UNO men. Freshman
Matthew Hansen also had a top ten finish in the 3000 after a time of 14:51.91 – good for ninth place.
With six out of 17 events final the Privateer women currently sit in fourth place with 30 points. On the men's side the Privateers are in eighth with 10 points after the first day of competition.
New Orleans qualified for 12 finals tomorrow, including:
Vivette Green (60m, 200m),
Mason Melancon (60m),
Sarinity Bracey (60m H),
Helen Baumgarten (60m H),
Jayden Sloan (400m),
Kelvin Chiku (800m), Forester (Mile), Litolff (Mile), Castillejo (Mile), Apppleton (Mile) and Sandrock (Mile).
