NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Track and Field programs capped another successful indoor season with the conclusion of the Southland Indoor Championships on Monday afternoon in Birmingham.
For the third year in a row the Privateer women set a new highwater mark for the program with a fourth place finish and 87 total points. The team continues its remarkable climb started by previous coach Brian Johnson and continued by
Brock Moreaux – finishing with 49 points two years ago, and 78 points last season.
Alowonle Alimot won the sole gold medal for New Orleans with a leap of 5.94 meters on Friday at the CrossPlex. Alimot took first place by .12 meters over the next best competitor – Lamar's Paarl Eelma. It's also the second longest long jump in school history falling one tenth of a meter shy of Melissa Evan's record set in 1998.
Vivette Green took home a pair of silver medals. Green finished second in both the 60m with a time of 7.54 and the 200m with a time of 24.05 – the latter mark was a new career best.
Ariana Jimenez took home a pair of bronze medals after finishing third in the women's 5,000m with a personal best of 17:15.68 and helped lead the Women's Distance Medley Relay to a third place finish with a time of 11:53.26.
Other silver medalists for New Orleans include both
Jaden Forester and
Alexandra Weir who finished their men's and women's miles in 4:24.29 and 4:55.25 respectively. Weir also took home third place in the women's 3000m with a time of 9:57.48.
Bronze medalists for UNO included
Kelvin Chiku who finished his 800m in 1:54.07,
Tshwanelo Maruping who finished her mile right behind Weir in 4:57.29, as well as the Women's Distance Medley team of Jimenez,
Trinity Bracey, Maruping, and Weir.
Kolyn Saltzman finished in fourth place in the 5000m and
Jayden Sloan broke the school record in the 400m with a 48.27 mark during preliminaries on the way to the Privateer men finishing in seventh place with 43 points. A healthy portion of the men's points came from the men's mile grouping – with five of six qualifying for the finals – Forester,
Cade Litolff and
Mason Appleton picked up 12 points for the men.
UIW won the men's Championship for the second straight year with 143.5 points, while Northwestern State won the women's Championship with 111 points.

HEAD COACH BROCK MOREAUX
"I am very happy with the way both the men's and women's teams responded to the pressure today. We had a few things that didn't go our way yesterday, and we knew we would have to really execute today to stay in the mix, and they leveled up. That is a tall order to ask from a young group, so I am immensely proud of them.
We will take a bit of a breather now and then get right back to work. I am excited to build upon this as we head into outdoor season in a couple of weeks!"
