DIAMONDHEAD – Junior Golfer
Ryan Fulton took full advantage of his first competitive outing since the 2022 Southland Championships finishing the Gulf Coast Collegiate in second place after shooting a career-best 211, while the Privateers used a strong final day to finish in third place with a total of 889.
Fulton started hot sinking his fifth career eagle on the very first hole of the tournament. A birdie followed soon after, and perhaps the highlight of the opening round came on hole nine with the Crowley native curling in a 40-footer for birdie. Ryan shot a 4-under-par 68 in the first round – his third round under 70 as a Privateer on Monday morning.
Ryan's strong opening day continued in the second round with birdies on one, eight, 10 and 16. The junior ended the opening 36-holes in second place a single stroke behind eventual winner Francois Jacobs of North Alabama.
Fulton made a strong run, and lead for the majority of round three before a triple bogey on hole 14 gave Francois and Charlie Forster of Southeastern the lead with five holes to play. Trailing by two strokes on final hole, Ryan's lob from the fringe ended up tantalizingly close to an eagle on the par 5 fifth hole but it wasn't meant to be, as he finished two strokes shy of the individual championship. The junior ended up with a career-high 14 birdies, to go with his eagle.
As a team New Orleans moved up three spots on the final day after shooting a 287 on Tuesday afternoon – the second best round of any team in the entire event. New Orleans made 47 birdies – second most among the field - including 14 from Fulton, and nine from both
Henry Augenstein and
Grayson Gilbert. The Privateers were also best in the field on par-5's averaging 4.80 and shooting 12-under on those holes.
Other individual efforts of note for the Privateers came from
Kyle Bennett and
Mason Roberts. Bennett moved up 20 spots after shooting a 69 in his final round, and ended up tied for 12th after carding a 224. Roberts finished tied for 22
nd after rounds of 75, 75 and 79.
North Alabama won the tournament with a score of 876, while Jacobs won the individual championship with a score of 209.
The Privateers return to action in two weeks when they head to the Louisiana Classics for the first time in almost 15 years on March 13-14 at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La.
