Privateers Move Up Three Spots on Final Day of Big Texan

DAY ONE RECAP | FINAL RESULTS (GOLFSTAT) | FINAL RESULTS

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Golf team moved up three spots on the final day of the 2023 Big Texan to finish in fifth place with a final scorecard of 884. Junior golf Ryan Fulton – who came into the final round in first place – paced the Privateers with a score of 214, tying him for fifth place with Joe Buenfield of UIW.

Fulton finished his Big Texan with rounds of 66, 73, and 75. The Crowley native entered his final hole at 4-under-par needing a birdie to tie the leaders. Unfortunately, he double bogeyed the hole leaving him with his second top-five finish this season. Ryan excelled on par-3's over Monday and Tuesday averaging 2.92 strokes while sinking 12 birdies.

Henry Augenstein was perhaps the most consistent Privateer over 54 holes finishing with rounds of 73, 73 and 74. Augenstein's total of 220 placed him tied for 21st.  Like Fulton, Henry made 12 birdies and had an eagle during round two.

Kyle Bennett moved up 24 spots between rounds one and three. After shooting a 78 on Monday morning the sophomore whittled away at his placement. A 74 on Monday after moved him up  moved him from 66th place to 50th place before a 75 during Tuesday's round move him into a tie for 42nd place.

Playing in his first tournament since October's Bear Brawl, Maximilian Wojciechowski improved six strokes between Monday and Tuesday after shooting an even par during round three. Max made three of his five birdies on Tuesday afternoon.

The hosts UTRGV won the team championship with a score of 873, while Baard Skogen and Gustav Andersson (both out of Texas Tech) tied for the individual championship with scores of 211.

HEAD COACH JEFF LORIO
(on Ryan Fulton)
"Ryan had another solid week. I know he wishes things finished a little different on the back nine today. But to have the lead in two of his last three events with a few holes to play speaks volumes for just how much he has improved as a golfer. Like the other guys, he will learn from this experience and be ready for his next opportunity."

(on the team)
"Tough event this week. We fought hard today but just could not finish the last few holes as we would have liked. This must be a learning expert for the guys. I still believe we have five guys on this team that can challenge for a conference championship. We will shake some things up this week and work hard to prepare for a great test at the Bearkat Invitational."
