Box Score NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team put up a fierce battle in defeat as they fell 5-2 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.
The day started with the Islanders taking the doubles point. Though
Raluca Puscas and
Didi Bredberg Canizares were the first to finish with a 6-2 win for New Orleans, the Islanders responded on the remaining courts with a 6-3 triumph at one and a 6-2 victory at three.
Bredberg then earned the first point of the match for the Privateers as she dominated defending Southland Player of the Year, Emma Aucagne 6-1, 6-2 to move to 9-1 in singles on the season.
The Islanders then collected the next three points. Victorie Delattre came back from 5-2 down in the second set to finish off a straight set win 6-0, 7-5. Sofia Pinto held at deuce point on her serve to finish both sets of a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Vaelria Cherfus also scored a straight set victory 6-4, 6-2 to give the Islanders their 16
th win of the season.
Laurie Barendse got out to a quick start in the third set to win her match. After winning the first set handily, Barendse was pushed to a third. She was ahead 5-2 and wound up holding serve at the second time of asking for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win.
