NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team will close their regular season and the Southland Conference slate with a Sunday morning match at the Lamar Cardinals. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
New Orleans (8-8, 1-5) is looking to bounce back from a tough few days on the road over the last week. The Privateers were narrowly defeated 4-3 by Southeastern and were swept in Natchitoches by Northwestern State.
Laurie Barendse is 4-2 in Southland play and has made a habit of pulling through in three-set matches. Of Barendse's four wins against conference opponents, three have come in three sets. On the season, Barendse has eight singles wins.
Raluca Puscas and
Didi Bredberg Canizares have been steady as they come in doubles. The duo have put together a 5-1 mark against Southland opponents and an 11-3 record overall. The only conference match they lost in doubles was in a tiebreak to UIW.
For Bredberg, on top of her singles exploits, the true freshman is a total of 22-5 in matches this spring.
With the Southland Tournament on the horizon, the Privateers are in seventh in the standings. Bryant and NJIT will be seeded according to ITA rankings. Seeds seven through ten will play on the first day of the tournament.
Lamar (10-10, 2-4) is sitting just ahead of the Privateers in the standings with also one match remaining. The Cardinals lost both matches last week to UIW (5-2) and A&M-Corpus Christi (6-1).
Megan Do has been rock solid at flight six for the Cardinals. Do is 13-3 overall and 4-1 against Southland opponents with a 10-2 mark at flight six. The Cardinals have employed 12 different doubles combinations this season.
