CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx.- The No. 4 New Orleans beach volleyball program opened the 2023 Southland Conference Championships with a 3-1 win over No. 5 Southeastern before dropping a 3-0 match to No. 1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi Friday afternoon.
The Privateers (19-16) dropped only one set to the Lions at court five but dominated in straight sets at all other courts. Juniors Ivana de Carvahlo Peixe and
Serena Baumgart put the first point on the board shutting the Lions down with 21-13 and 21-18 decisions. Seniors
Trinity Jackson and
Alexa Spartz made easy work of the Lions at court two with a 21-17, 21-15 win. Clinching the match were seniors
Valerie Vujnovich and
Hannah Volpi at court three with a 21-18, 21-19 win. The match on court one went unfinished.
In the winner's bracket match, New Orleans took on an SLC undefeated A&M-Corpus Christi team. The Islanders swept the Privateers on courts four, five, and three. Courts one and two went unfinished.
New Orleans is set for a 12:15 CT match against No. 7 Nicholls on Saturday, April 22. The winner of the match will play the winner of the HCU match.
