Privateers Match Best Round of Season, Sit in Fifth Place After Day One at Walden Invitational

DAY ONE RESULTS

NEW ORLEANS – Two years ago nothing seemed to go well for the Privateers at the former Bearkat Invitational – today told a different story. The Privateers shot a 578, a 32-stroke opening day improvement in the event, to end the day in fifth place after the opening 36-holes of the Huntsville Toyota Walden Invitational.

Senior Grayson Gilbert threatened to be the fourth Privateer in four weeks to take the individual lead into day two. The senior shot an opening round 69, and followed that up with a score of 70 tying him for second place going into the final round.

At last week's Big Texan junior Ryan Fulton made an incredible five straight birdies. This week Gilbert matched that feat sinking five consecutive birdies during the second round – vaulting him into the individual lead midway through the second round.

The Monroe native's first round was his first below 70 this season and the first for him since last season's Grover Page Classic. In 39 tournaments during his time on the Lakefront Grayson has turned in 12 rounds below 70 on his scorecard.

The only Privateer with experience at Walden at Conroe, Grayson improved his opening-day score from 156 two seasons ago to 139 on Monday. As a team, the Privateers improved 32-strokes on their opening two rounds at Walden in 2021.

Henry Augustein finished tied for 25th after rounds of 73 and 71. During the second round, Henry had a stretch of birdie-par-eagle-birdie on holes 14-17, helping him notch his first sub-par round since last season's Golfweek Fall Challenge. Henry's eagle on hole 16 was the second eagle in two weeks for the graduate student.

Ryan Fulton and Kyle Bennett also both had solid outings for UNO.  Fulton tied for 35th with a score of 146 after rounds of 72 and 74 with seven birdies.  Bennett finished tied for 50th with a score of 150 after rounds of 72 and 78 with eight birdies.

Thomas Artigas, playing as an independent, finished his day tied for 35th after rounds of 72, and 74 left him 2-over-par entering tomorrow's final round.

Round three gets underway tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. Fans can follow along on Golfstat.com, or follow @PrivateersGolf on Twitter for updates throughout the day.
