Women's Tennis Travels to Southeastern, Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team will hit the road for a pair of matches starting on Saturday. The Privateers make the short trip to Hammond where they will face Southeastern. A drive to Northwestern State in a rescheduled match follows next Tuesday.

The matches are at 12 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.

New Orleans (8-6, 1-3) picked up their first conference win in their last match. The Privateers defeated UIW 5-2 and handed the Cardinals their first Southland loss of the season. The Privateers rallied back after losing the doubles point to start the match.

Didi Bredberg Canizares won her first Southland Player of the Week award on Tuesday. The true freshman had a 3-1 week against UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In the midst of that stretch, Bredberg defeated reigning Southland Player of the Year, Emma Aucagne in straight sets.

In her first collegiate season, Bredberg is 19-4 between singles and doubles. Bredberg is 9-3 in doubles along with teammate, Raluca Puscas.

Laurie Barendse is 3-1 against Southland opponents in singles. Two of those wins have come in three sets. Barendse won in straight sets against Estefania Gonzalez last Saturday (6-4, 7-5).

The Privateers are winners of seven straight against the Lady Lions heading into the weekend. The last time Southeastern beat New Orleans was in April 2014.

Northwestern State is 8-2 against the Privateers since New Orleans joined the Southland Conference.

Southeastern (7-8, 1-3) lost a heartbreaker to Lamar 4-3 in their last match. Putri Insani is 10-3 on the season in singles.

Northwestern State (9-8, 1-3) is 5-1 at home this season. The Lady Demons lost their last match 4-3 to McNeese. Tjasa Klevisar is 11-4 on the spring campaign and 8-1 at flight one in singles.
