NEW ORLEANS – Jorim Bangue,
Elliott Cummings,
Ellis Cummings,
Mason Melancon and
Jayden Sloan will make the 546 mile trip Jacksonville, Fla this afternoon after qualifying for the NCAA's Outdoor Track and Field East Regional.
Bangue gets things started for the Privateers with the 110-meter hurdles starting at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Jorim qualified for the event with personal best mark of 13.87 set during the Southland Championships two weeks ago – good for the second-best time in the league this season, and 43
rd place on the NCAA's East qualifying list. Wednesday will mark the first NCAA Regional for the freshman out of Cameroon.
Elliott Cummings is set to participate in his third NCAA Regional matching
Vojislav Gvero for the most all-time by a Privateer. Cummings qualified the 100 for the third year in a row following a time of 10.13 at the Southland Championships. His mark was the fourth best in the Southland this season, and 18
th best in the East Region. Previous 100 meter times for Cummings at NCAA Regionals include a 10.19 (semifinals) and a 10.25 (prelims) in 2021 and a 10.28 last season. The men's 100 is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Sloan qualified for the 400-meter hurdles after winning gold at the Southland Championship with a time of 51.19. Jayden set a personal best in the discipline while becoming the first 400-meter hurdles Southland champion in program history. His time ranked second in the Southland and 28
th in the East. The junior has previous NCAA postseason experience after competing in the 2022 Div. III Outdoor Championships during his time at McMurry. The men's 400-meter hurdles are scheduled start at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
Ellis Cummings and Melancon will join Elliott and Jayden for the men's 4x100 on at 4:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. The foursome qualified after clocking 39.75 at LSU's Alumni Gold. It will be the second appearance at an NCAA Regional for both Ellis and Mason after running in last year's 4x100 meter relay with former Privateers
Julian Forde and
Ismael Kone.
If Bangue,
Elliott Cummings, or Sloan qualify for the quarterfinal rounds of their individual events their races will begin at 5:15 p.m. (110 meter hurdles), 5:35 p.m. (100 meters), and 6:25 (400 meter hurdles) Friday evening. A potential quarterfinal appearance in the 4x100 relay for the Privateers would begin at 7:45 p.m. on Friday night as well.
New Orleans' five participants are the second most the school has ever sent to an NCAA Regional after sending six student-athletes last season. The Privateers will compete in four events, again the second most in school history after competing in five last year. Live results will be available
here, and the entire regional will be streamed live on ESPN+.
