NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans' men's and women's track teams will head to Memorial Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M Commerce for the 2023 Southland Outdoor Championships on May 4-6.
Both the men and women are looking to build on last year's fourth (women) and fifth place (men) finishes at the Southland Outdoor Championships. Those marked the highest Southland tournament placements in school history, with both point totals, 93 for the women and 104 for the men, also being program bests.
At last season's outdoor championships current Privateers
Ellis Cummings and
Christopher Murphy were part of a gold medal winning 4x100 team.
Kolyn Saltzman placed second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:13.46, and third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
Elliott Cummings won a third-place medal with a 20.84 mark in last year's 200 meter finals and
Jaden Forester took home the bronze in the men's 1,500 meter finals with a time of 4:00.84.
On the women's side
Vivette Green took home a pair of silver medals for her efforts in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes.
Ariana Jimenez finished second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and third in the women's 5,000 meter race.
Alexandra Weir placed second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:28.29, and
Mathilde Helms-Kjaer finished second at 10,000 meters.
The Privateer men enter Thursday with 36 results ranked within the top-25 on the Southland performance list. Saltzman has the best 3,000 meter steeplechase mark in the conference at 9:01.55 set during the Bryan Clay Invitational, and
Kelvin Chiku sits second in the conference with a 3:48.73 in the 1,500 meters.
The Privateer women have done even better with 40 results ranked within the top-25 on the Southland Performance list.
Ariana Jimenez is second in the Southland in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:31.11.
Rebecca DeKay's time of 16:58.31 in the Bryan Clay Invitational's 5,000 meter race ranks second in the league as well.
