Privateers Finish Day One of Golfweek Fall Challenge 3-Under Par

DAY ONE RESULTS

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Golf team got the 2023-2024 season off to a solid start after finishing the opening round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge in 10th place with a score of 285 on Sunday afternoon at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.

Junior Kyle Bennett led the way for the Privateers after shooting a 2-under-par, good for 22nd place individually. Sunday marked his sixth career round under par.

Bogeys on holes three and nine left the Zachary native 1-over par after the first nine holes of the season.
Bennett birdied the tenth hole before making his third career eagle on hole 15 and playing even the rest of the way. Kyle had a pair of eagles his freshman year with his last coming at the Pinetree Intercollegiate in 2021.

True freshman George Trappey has a solid afternoon in his collegiate debut as well. Trappey finished 1-under-par with a 71 after the first 18 holes of his career.  The two-time LHSAA state champion stayed calm after a double bogey on his second hole, and responded with birdies on four, five and nine to finish his front nine with a score of 36.  Trappey played even the rest of the way, and in total 14 of his 18 holes were at par or better on Sunday afternoon.

Mason Roberts and Maximilian Wojciechowski both finished at even par to round out the counters for the Privateers. Both Roberts and Wojciechowski made four birdies to lead New Orleans during the opening round.

Ryan Fulton got off to a slow start sitting at 5-over-par after his first nine holes but rallied on the back half making birdies on 11 and 12 to finish 4-over-par with a score of 76.

In two appearances at True Blue Golf Club / the Golfweek Fall Challenge the Privateers have finished all four rounds below 290. Thunderstorms caused a delay starting at 11:55 p.m. CST. with play resuming just after 3:00 p.m.

Things get back underway tomorrow morning with Fulton teeing off first for New Orleans at 7:08 a.m. Live scoring can be found on GolfStat.com here.

HEAD COACH JEFF LORIO
"I'm never disappointed with an under par round, but I felt that we left a lot in the tank today. We were slow out of the gate and didn't make many puts on the front nine. I felt that the rain delay at the turn helped. We regrouped and came out and shot under par after the delay. We must get off to a better start tomorrow and put up a low score."

(on George Trappey's debut)
"I'm super proud of George's performance in his first collegiate start. He made a double bogey on the second hole and was two over par out of the gate. He fought through that to make three birdies and shoot one under on the front nine. He was super steady on the backside making nine straight pars. It was a great start and something that he can definitely grow from."
