NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's cross country program has been ranked No. 12 in the South Central Region while the Privateer men have been ranked 13
th in the latest regional polls released by the United States Track & Field / Cross Country Coaches Association.
After two weeks at No. 11 the Privateer women fell one spot to No. 12 following a week off. Two weeks ago, the women's team finished in 10
th place (out of 35 teams) at the Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala.
Seven Privateer women finished inside the top-100 in a field of over 320 runners.
Rebecca DeKay led the way with a 52
nd place finish in 17:56.8 while
Oxana Bonjorn-Giros,
Tshwanelo Maruping, and
Holly Hedrick all set new personal bests at John Hunt Park.
After originally being ranked as high as No. 11 in the preseason poll the Privateer men find themselves ranked No. 13 after last running two weeks ago. Like the women's team the men finished in 10
th place at the Southern Showcase.
Freshman
Matthew Hansen paced the Privateers in his first career 8K after clocking in at 24:36.6 – good for 30
th place and the 12
th best 8K time in school history. Five Privateer men finished inside the top-100 in a field of over 300 runners with
Evan Pardo, and
Antonio Delgado setting new personal bests.
The UNO men have been ranked in 19 straight regional polls dating back to February of 2020, while the women have been ranked in 14 straight regional polls dating back to October of 2021. The Privateer men are ranked ahead of former Southland foe Stephen F. Austin and LSU while the women are ranked ahead of Houston, ULM, and former Southland foe Central Arkansas.
UP NEXT
The Privateers return to the course on Saturday Oct. 14 when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama. The men will run an 8K at 8:30 a.m., with the women's 6K set for 9:20 a.m. at Pritchett Park. Information about live scoring and a potential live stream will be made available in the future.
