NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Golf team used one of the best rounds in school history and one of the best 54-hole scores in school history to move up three spots and finish in sole possession of third place during the final round of the Derek Dolenc Invitational on a historic Tuesday afternoon in Madison, Ill.
New Orleans' third round score of 276 was the fourth lowest round in school history and helped the Privateers finish with a final tally of 841 (11-under par) – the second lowest 54-hole score in school history. The school record is 839 set at the 2008 ASU Indian Classic.
The Privateers' score at this year's Derek Dolenc Invitational topped the previous low of 851 (set at the 2019 Sam Hall Intercollegiate) during the
Jeff Lorio era, and three of the top five lowest scores in school history have either been set or matched during his tenure.
Today's third round score of 276 is also the best round shot by one of Lorio's teams, surpassing the 277 set during the third round of the 2021 Golfweek Fall Challenge. It was also the 10
th round of golf by Privateer Golf with a score under 280 since the 1992/1993 season. Through nine rounds of golf this season New Orleans has shot par or better eight times and finished below par six times – including four of the last five rounds.
The star of Tuesday afternoon was sophomore
Canon Clark. Clark's third round score of 65 ties Florian Moosmeier (2019), Ken Looper (2009), and Kenji Murayama (2006) for the second lowest round by a Privateer during the Div. I era.
As a freshman last season Clark sank 12 birdies in three tournaments – the Broussard native sank seven on Tuesday on his way to 10 total during the Derek Dolenc Invitational. Clark finished tied for 18
th with a score of 211 – a 25 stroke improvement over his previous 54-hole best, a 236 during last season's Grover Page Classic.
Kyle Bennett led the way individually for the Privateers finishing tied for 12
th place with rounds of 71, 70 and 68. His final score of 209 was a new personal best and a four stroke improvement on his effort at the Grover Page Classic two seasons ago. The Zachary native also sank a career-best 16 birdies.
Bennett's third round score of 68 ties the second lowest round of his time on the Lakefront after he shot a 67 at this year's Golfweek Fall Challenge and was the fifth round under 70 of his career. Between Maximilan Wojciechowski (2),
Ryan Fulton (2), Bennett and Clark the Privateers have six individual rounds of golf below 70 this season through the opening three tournaments.
Wojciechowski's streak of three straight rounds under par ended after he shot a 76 on Tuesday afternoon, but the Berlin native finished with a respectable score of 214 – a new personal best as well. Wojciechowski has been par or better in seven of his nine rounds this season, and under par in five of those. He finished tied for 31
st.
Mason Roberts finished with a score of 215 and tied for 36
th. It was his best 54-hole score as a member of the Privateers, and matches the 215 he shot at the NJCAA Div. I National Preview as a member of Odessa Community College in 2020.
Ryan Fulton rounded out the scoring for the Privateers finishing tied for 42
nd after shooting a 216. His score of 69 during the second round was the seventh of his career under 70.
The University of New Orleans Golfers return to action next week on Monday Oct. 2 when they travel to RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark. for the 2023 Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate. Information on live scoring will be made available in due course.

HEAD COACH JEFF LORIO
"I'm very proud of our team today. We bounced back after not playing our best and put together a really good round of golf. We caught every team ahead of us that was catchable. That's the sign of a good team. The next step for us is getting off to better starts in round one and contending for tournament titles. We will keep working hard – I believe we have it in us!"
(on Canon Clark)
"I'm super happy for Canon. What a special day it was for him, and it was so enjoyable to watch. The sky is the limit for him if he stays patient and keeps working hard."
