Four Privateers to Represent Tennis Teams at Southland Fall Championships

HAMMOND, La. – Four Privateers will be represented this weekend in Hammond as part of the Southland Fall Championships which will take place at Southeastern. The women's competition begins Thursday while the men will begin on Friday.

Each participating team will send one singles player and one doubles team to participate in a single elimination bracket. The winners of each bracket will represent the Southland at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in November.

WOMEN'S BRACKET
Anastassia Kouchnareva will be the singles representative for the Privateer women. Kouchnareva will play in the first round against Asta Mietten of Lamar. A win would advance Kouchnareva to Friday's quarterfinal against 1-seed Ana Veroux of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The most experienced student-athlete on the roster, Kouchnareva was 9-8 overall and 5-2 against Southland opponents while playing primarily at flight two. This is Kouchnareva's third season with the Privateers.

In doubles, Kouchnareva will pair with newcomer, Fleur Sprengers. The duo making their fall debut, are pitted against Mietten and Megan Do of Lamar. A win would advance them to the quarterfinals against 1-seed, Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli.

Sprengers is playing in her first event in a Privateer uniform.

MEN'S PREVIEW
Matthew Armbruster will represent the Privateers in singles. In a seven-person bracket, Armbruster is the 4-seed. He will play Santiago Serrano of UTRGV in the opening round which begins on Friday afternoon.

A win advances Armbruster to the semifinals against Pablo Perez Ramos of the defending Southland champions, NJIT. Perez Ramos earned the championship clinching point for the Highlanders in April against Lamar.

In doubles, Armbruster will team up with Marc Mail to play against the 2-seed duo of Alejandro Hernandez and Emilio Vila of UIW on Friday morning. Mail won his singles flight in the Battle Down the Bayou. Armbruster was part of an All-Southland doubles team last season.

The action for the men's bracket starts with singles on 9 a.m. Friday.
