DAY ONE RESULTS (GolfStat)
ALGIERS – The University of New Orleans golf team shot rounds of 301 and 302 to finish the opening day of the Gulf Coast Collegiate in fourth place with a score of 603 at English Turn.
Louisiana transfer Matt Weber led the way for the Privateers and sits tied for fourth after rounds of 74, and 72. Weber made five birdies and an eagle during his first two rounds as a UNO golfer, and sits three strokes out of first place heading into Tuesday.
Kyle Bennett finished his day tied for 18th following rounds of 76 and 75. The Zachary native sits in the top-20, just two strokes shy of the top-8 after making five birdies on Monday.
Gabriel Gallego had the first hole-in-one in over thirty years for the Privateers with an ace on hole 12 during the opening round before finishing his day with a score of 158.
In addition to Weber, Gallego and George Trappey and - both playing as independents - had eagles as well, bringing UNO's to 15 eagles so far this season. Canon Clark, also playing as an independent, made the most birdies by a Privateer with seven.
After 36 holes of play the Privateers trail third place HCU by a single stroke, second place UIW by two strokes, and are in striking distance of first place Memphis who shot a 590 on Monday. New Orleans made 25 birdies as a team, and excelled on par-5 holes with a 4.78 average – the best in the field.
The final round gets underway tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Privateers will be paired with Memphis, UIW and HCU. Live scoring will again be available on GolfStat.
