DAY ONE RESULTS (BIRDIE FIRE)
NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Golf team continued to compile rounds under par with scores of 284 and 282 on the opening day of the 2024 Colin Montgomerie Invitational. The Privateers' total of 566 tied them for fourth place with Weber State headed into tomorrow's final round.
Kyle Bennett led the way turning in a scorecard of 136 after the opening 36 holes. Bennett is the 11th Privateer golfer since 1992 to have back-to-back rounds below 70, and the first since his brother Brady accomplished the feat twice in 2021.
The Zachary native was good in the first round, but exceptional in the second with birdies on two, six, eight, 11, 12, and 15 with just one bogey blemishing his scorecard. His second-round score of 67 matches his career-low round from earlier this year – the second round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge.
Bennett is tied for third with Grayson Glorioso of Southeastern and Kci Lindskog of Texas Southern at 8-under-par. He is three strokes behind Griffin Dorr of Southeastern who sits in second place at 11-under-par, and five strokes behind Jacob Borow who is playing as an independent out of Houston at 13-under-par.
Ryan Fulton sits tied for 16th after rounds of 72 and 69. Monday's second round was the third time this season and the eighth time in his career at UNO that Fulton has finished a round below 70. The Crowley native made 10 birdies on Monday afternoon.
After leading New Orleans last week Matt Weber shot his first round under 70 as a member of the program. Weber used a strong front nine with birdies on two, three, eight, and nine to finish his opening 18 holes with a score of 69. Weber ended Monday tied for 24th with a score of 143.
Rounding out the individual scores for New Orleans were Thomas Artigas who sits tied for 48th after shooting a 146, and Maximilian Wojciechowski who sits tied for 60th after a score of 146.
The Privateers averaged 3.92 on par four holes – second best in the field - and sank 23 birdies, which was also second best in the field on Monday.
As a team, New Orleans now has 10 rounds below par through 20 rounds so far this season. The 2007-2008 squad compiled a school record 11 rounds below par over 32 rounds that season. Monday marked the second time the season UNO has opened a tournament with back-to-back rounds below par as a team.
New Orleans returns to the course tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. for the final round of the Colin Montgomerie Invitational. Privateer golfers will be paired with Missouri State, Stephen F. Austin, and UIW. Updates will be available here courtesy of Birdie Fire.
