OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – For the eighth straight season, the University of New Orleans golf program is represented on the Southland Conference's All-Academic Golf team with
Thomas Artigas and
Kyle Bennett named to the first and second teams on Friday afternoon.
Artigas was named to the first team after finishing last semester with a cumulative 3.875 grade point average while completing his MBA this season. On the course, he played in five tournaments and averaged 75.267 over 15 rounds.
The graduate student had a low round of 69 and a low 54-hole score of 223, both achieved at the LaTOUR Intercollegiate in October. His best finish came during the Southland Championship, where he finished tied for 23rd after shooting a 225.
He joins Max Hellstrom (2018-2019, 2019-2020) as the only two-time Southland All-Academic selections in school history, having also been chosen following his freshman season four years ago.
Bennett was named to the league's second team after earning his degree in Finance a year early with a 3.554 grade point average. On the course, he played in all ten tournaments for New Orleans, and in six of those, he played in either the No. 1 or No. 2 position in the lineup.
The Zachary High School product averaged 71.933 over 30 rounds this season with 13 rounds below par. Kyle finished inside the top 20 six times, inside the top 10 three times, and had a pair of third-place finishes. His low round this season was a 67, and his low 54-hole score was a 207, both achieved at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational.
Kyle joins his brother Brady as a Southland All-Academic team member after Brady was selected following the 2021-2022 season.
The pair are the ninth and tenth Southland All-Academic Golf team selections in school history – all under Head Coach
Jeff Lorio. It is the second time New Orleans has had two selections in the same season – both Artigas and Florian Moosmeier were chosen following the 2020-2021 season.
HEAD COACH JEFF LORIO
"The All-Academic team award is one of the most important awards the conference gives out. The recipients represent the truest meaning of what a student-athlete should be – young men who excel both on the golf course and in the classroom. These two young men have had a great year both on the course, but more importantly in the classroom - this award is just another deserving honor."
"This is the eighth year in a row that we have had at least one Privateer represented on this team and that accomplishment something I am personally very proud of."

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests. Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win. Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play, and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day. Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
