LAKE CHARLES – The New Orleans beach volleyball team (1-5) ended the day with a narrow loss to UMHB and a sweeping victory over Nicholls.
Today's battle against UMHB was close throughout. Despite falling short of the victory, the Privateers won two pair matches in the duel.
Dayla Ward and
Ava Rixford found their victory in two sets, with long rallies and several point comebacks.
Ashley Salazar and
Jaedyn Newman clenched their pair victory in three. They found a successful rhythm in the first set, with Jaedyn hitting deep and Ashley defending deep. When they reached the third, they found their rhythm again and cemented the victory. This was the first game back for
Ashley Salazar, who has just cleared to play after having surgery. Despite their third set loss,
Ivana de Carvalho Peixe and
Mona Salgado dominated their first set of this matchup, particularly due to de Carvalho Peixe's serves. It was a tough loss, but the team saw where they were starting to shine.
Today's sweep against Nicholls marks the team's first season and conference victory of the 2025 season. Despite the wind being a factor.
Nikelle Lander and
Tristin Smith nearly shut out their opponents to secure their pair victory. Lander's serves during this match were especially prominent, resulting in many points for the pair. This was a story of redemption for Lander, after having a self-proclaimed poor performance earlier in the day. Her perseverance was evident in the afternoon.
Renata Dykstra and
Grace Hinchman sealed the sweep for the Privateers in a dominant two-set victory, with the entire team cheering them on from the sidelines.
Tomorrow, New Orleans faces Sam Houston and McNeese to round out their time in Lake Charles.
