NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans beach volleyball team (2-6) completed their time at the Cowgirl Beach Bash on Saturday with a 5-0 sweep against Sam Houston and a 2-3 loss to McNeese. This brings them to a 2-2 record for the weekend.
Against Sam Houston, the team saw success of all kinds.
Dayla Ward and
Ava Rixford dominated the score in their flight 4 match. Ava's serves were particularly challenging for the opposition. They were both able to find great locations for the ball, and they both attributed their success in the match to the fun they had.
Mona Salgado and
Ivana de Carvalho Peixe (2) both had great moments in their 3-set match. They dominated the first set 21-10. After losing the second set they were one-to-one at the beginning of the third. It was Salgado's placement of the ball that secured them the victory with a 15-11 third set. New Orleans finished their sweep with a competitive flight 1 match. After winning an incredibly close first set (23-21), the Privateers fell in the second.
Nikelle Lander and
Tristin Smith found their spark in the third. Smith was relentless at the net both on the defensive and the offensive. Lander rounded out the victory with an ace streak. Team spirits were high after the favorable result.
For their McNeese match, New Orleans switched up their lineup, moving
Ashley Salazar and
Jaedyn Newman up to flight 4.
Against McNeese, the Privateers and the Cowgirls exchanged victories, with UNO victories in flight 1 and flight 4. Salazar and Newman (4) came back from a loss in the first set to win the match in 3. In flights 2 and 5, the Privateers took the Cowgirls into a third set, but it wasn't enough to come out with the victory.
Next Up
New Orleans will be heading to Birmingham, AL next weekend to play in the March to May where they will compete against Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama, UT Martin, and UAB.
