STARKVILLE, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will play the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. when they take on the #12 Mississippi State Bulldogs.
It's the Privateers' second tournament appearance with their first coming against the Florida Gators in 2022.
New Orleans went through the tournament as a 5-seed, completing their run to a title with a 4-1 win over defending Southland Tournament champion, NJIT. Freshman of the Year,
Julian Franzmann clinched the match-winning point.
Matthew Armbruster and
David Tesic were both on the 2022 squad that went to Gainesville. Armbruster was Southland Tournament MVP while Tesic was a First Team All-Southland selection in singles during the regular season and postseason.
The doubles teams of
Joseph Townes and
Jay Temming along with Armbruster and
Sep de Visser have combined for 23 wins on the year. Townes and Temming sport a 14-5 record while Armbruster and de Visser are 9-6 on the season.
New Orleans had five Privateers reach double figures in singles wins this season. Leading the way was Franzmann who went 14-4 in his freshman season while playing mostly between flights two and three.
Tesic won 12 singles matches on the year.
Marc Mail and de Visser each had 11 wins and Townes finished with 10 victories in singles during the 2025 spring campaign.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Mississippi State (22-5) is hosting the opening two rounds of the tournament for the third consecutive season. The Bulldogs have reached the last 16 in five of the last six seasons heading into this weekend.
Two Bulldogs are ranked inside the top 70 nationally in the latest ITA singles rankings. Benito Sanchez Martinez is ranked 30
th while Petar Jovanovic is ranked 65
th. Mississippi State has only lost the doubles point twice this season against Pepperdine and North Carolina State.
