LAKE CHARLES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers beach volleyball team won their conference opener against Stephen F. Austin and had a solid weekend overall, going 3-1 at the Cowgirl Beach Bash hosted by McNeese.
The Privateers won 3-2 against Stephen F. Austin, 4-1 against Mary-Hardin Baylor and 3-2 against Texas A&M-Kingsville. In the weekend finale, New Orleans lost 4-1 to McNeese.
NEW ORLEANS-3 SFA-2
The Privateers and Lady Jacks played a thriller to begin the weekend. Cassie and
Ellie Sieling won a marathon first set that nearly took half an hour as they persevered 29-27 in extra rallies before taking the second set to help get the weekend off on the right note.
Renata Dykstra and
Jordan Madsen paired for a 21-19, 21-18 victory. After holding off a late SFA rally, Dykstra and Madsen got out to a 9-5 lead in the second set and made it hold.
The other win came from
Ashley Salazar and
Brooke Dow. The duo controlled the second set and won in straight sets 21-18, 21-14.
NEW ORLEANS-4 MARY-HARDIN BAYLOR-1
Salazar and Dow were in command once again on the sand as they only allowed 20 total points in a 21-11, 21-9 victory.
Kylie Lyons and
Lucianna Alexander scored their first win of the weekend by extending the full three sets. The duo rebounded from dropping the second set to pick up a 15-9 win in the third.
The Privateers also got another win from the Sieling twins who were triumphant in straight sets. They steadily pulled away in each set and won comfortably by a 21-15, 21-13 score line.
NEW ORLEANS-3 TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE-2
The Privateers scored a thrilling win over Texas A&M-Kingsville to start the day on Saturday.
Lyons and Alexander notched another victory after taking the first set in extra rallies. They then surged in the second set by taking seven of the last eight points on their way to a 24-22, 21-15 win.
Salazar and Dow moved to 3-0 on the weekend after a 21-14, 21-19 victory. The pair scored five of the last seven points to close out the first set on a strong note.
The Privateers also got a win from Dykstra and Lyons who finished out the third set of their match with a 15-8 victory.
MCNEESE-4 NEW ORLEANS-1
Salazar and Dow finished out the weekend by going 4-0 after taking their match when they rallied from a set down. The duo lost the first set 21-17 but won the next two sets 21-15, 15-8.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will host the Pontchartrain Beach Bash and will face College of Charleston, Southeastern and McNeese.
