Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. - The Southern offense came alive for 16
hits and scored 19 runs to take a 19-2 victory over the University of New
Orleans on Friday night at Lee-Hines Field in the opener for both teams.
UNO (0-1) kept SU (1-0) off the scoreboard in the first
inning, before the Jaguars put a crooked number on the board in each of the
next seven frames in which they came to the plate.
The hosts scored at least two runs an inning starting in the
second inning and capping their explosive stretch with five in the sixth,
pushing their lead to 15-1 with three more innings to spare.
Daniel Garcia was credited the win after allowing one run on
two hits over four innings in his first pitching appearance for SU since 2009.
Brian Foster threw four innings and allowed the other run in relief with Joshua
Rochelle adding a scoreless ninth for the hosts to wrap up the contest.
SU's Ozzie Lamis was 2-for-5 in the contest with four RBIs
with former Privateer catcher Clint Ourso adding four more RBIs after a 2-for-4
performance at the plate.
UNO starter Cory Myers (0-1) took the loss after allowing
eight runs - seven earned - on nine hits during his four innings of work.
The Privateers were led at the plate by Cameron Wheeless,
who hit 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the fourth inning that scored Zach Pohto.
Andrew Garcia produced the other run for UNO, belting a home
run in the seventh inning.
The two teams will resume their three-game series in New
Orleans at Maestri Field on Saturday at 4 p.m. before concluding the weekend
back at Lee-Hines Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats and Twitter updates will
