Southern Fends Off UNO Rally for Series Victory

BATON ROUGE, La. - Southern scored eight runs in the first inning and then held off a University of New Orleans' rally for an 11-7 victory at Lee-Hines Field on Sunday afternoon.

Nolan Church, who led UNO (1-2) with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate, provided a home run to left field in the top of the first before SU (2-1) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame.

Frazier Hall, who led the Jaguar offense with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, picked up two RBIs after hitting a triple off of Privateer starter Robert Ormsbee (0-1). Ormsbee, who retired just one of the six batters he faced, allowed five runs on three hits before being relieved.

The Jaguars picked up their other three runs of the first inning off of UNO reliever Kyle Blancaneaux, who closed out the first inning before allowing his final run in the second.

By the fifth inning, SU led UNO 10-2, before the Privateers cut into the deficit with three runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

Blake LeBlanc provided the offense in the sixth after Tyler Sanders and Jared Juneau walked. The junior doubled his teammates in, before scoring on an error by the shortstop on the same play.

SU scored their final run of the game in the sixth inning before Michael Tedesco drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single in the eighth. Tedesco had two hits in the game, joining teammates Chris Geronimo, Cameron Wheeless and Andrew Garcia with a pair of hits.

Jesse Holiday (1-0) picked up the win for the Jaguars, allowing two runs on three hits over just three innings.

The UNO baseball team will be back in Baton Rouge on Tuesday for the third time in five days when they battle nationally-ranked LSU at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers are 3-0 on the season after sweeping Wake Forest over the weekend and will start right-handed pitcher Tyler Jones against the Privateers.
